Ty Cobb’s darkest hours

December 18, 2008

When Ty Cobb arrived in Royston, Georgia, on August 10, 1905, his father was dead from a shotgun blast and his mother was facing arrest for involuntary manslaughter. The small community was abuzz over the shocking death of their most influential and prominent figure, while Ty was in a state of shock at the loss of his father. On this date – Cobb’s birthday – I share an excerpt from my biography of the baseball legend.

Optimize your Cascading Stylesheet and Improve Performance

December 15, 2008

If you’re like me, you hate wasted space in your code, whether it be page code or how you style in your CSS files. Thankfully, we can use GZIP compression to compress the CSS file and remove unneeded white space from the stylesheet. This can be very helpful in reducing page load times.

Make your Web Text more readable with CSS

December 1, 2008

Web developers should take careful consideration of the manner in which we present text to the user. It’s important that the text is easy to read. One way this can be accomplished is by setting the Leading and Kerning in the CSS (cascading style sheets) file. Here’s a short tutorial to help you understand what “leading” and “kerning” are and how to manipulate them through CSS. For the purposes of this tutorial, I will assume you have a good understanding of CSS.

Blast from the Past: Charles Fleischer

October 22, 2008

Charles Fleischer is best known as Roger Rabbit, but he’s been around a long time. His bit titled “Moleeds” is a classic that I remember from the 1980s.

Selig should change All-Star Game rule

July 14, 2008

Like him or hate him, Bud Selig is presiding over the most financially prosperous era in baseball history. Some of the commisioner?s most controversial decisions – interleague play and the the wild-card format, for example – have proven wildly successful and popular with fans. Other controversial decisions – expansion and league realignment, and his reluctant ?pursuit? of steroid users – have yet to fully play out, but they haven?t stopped the ballpark turnstyles from spinning.

Bayshore Marathon is in the books

May 28, 2008

One thing is for sure, when I’m scheduled to run 26.2, you can count on a clear, sunny day. It was in the low 70s and sunny last Saturday when I crossed the finish line for my second marathon, this one the Bayshore in Traverse City.
